The Shpilman International Prize for Excellence in Photography 2012 (Israel)

The Shpilman International Prize for Excellence in Photography, awarded every second year, aims to catalyze groundbreaking work in the field by providing scholars and photographers with financial support in the amount of $ 45,000 US in order to pursue original work and ideas in the medium. A first of its kind, the prize is awarded exclusively for the creation of new research rather than the recognition of previously completed projects. It is presented to an artist and/or scholar who aims to expand the boundaries of the medium and contribute to the understanding of photography.

As detailed in the regulations, prospective candidates may include artists and scholars in photography with a rich and well established record of past achievements who intend to create new work or undertake new research in the field, ideally combining the theory and practice of photography.

The prize in the amount of $ 45,000 US will be awarded based on the decision of an international jury consisting of Anne Tucker (The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), Prof. Dr. Bodo von Dewitz (Museum Ludwig, Köln), Prof. Dana Arieli-Horowitz (Bezalel, Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem), Prof. Hanan Laskin (Founder of the Photography Department at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design) chaired by Nissan N. Perez (The Israel Museum, Jerusalem).

The Shpilman Prize is open to all and free of prejudices of race, nationality, religion or gender. Potential candidates may include artists and scholars in photography with a proven and significant record of past achievements who intend to undertake a research project of consequence in the field. Entrants should have already accomplished a significant body of work and significant professional credentials. Candidates for the prize must be nominated by experienced professionals in art and/or photography affiliated with non-commercial artistic, cultural or academic institutions.

Shalom Shpilman, founder and director of the Shpilman Institute for Photography, said “I look forward to the high quality applications. The Shpilman Prize marks the amalgamation of practice and theory in photography with the first awards proving that many inquisitive forces are pursuing the merger between photography and theory.”
