Evaluating The Canon G1X's Image Quality

By looking at the images, one sees that they are clean, but at the cost of fine details, which are smudged away as a side effect of creating those silky smooth pictures. The biggest drop in image quality: between ISO 800 and 1600, during which the fine details at 800 become messy blurs at 1600. This is especially evident on the studio shots with the fabric pieces.

Despite a gigantic sensor, simply can't deliver the goods on image quality in JPEG format, which will be a disappointment to many potential users as most P&S shooters just want to have pictures and not play with RAW conversion.

The G1X is no dSLR replacement, but simply a glorified, over-priced P&S that, while it will clobber any traditional P&S employing a small sensor, still can't deliver the goods at what could now be considered mid ISOs and up. Yes, whiler the G1X is by no means junk, just beware that it does hae an Achilles Heel.
