Water Clouds

The original intention was to tell you something about where to place the flashes and how to bring the color into your water drop pictures.

But I changed my intention due to the fact that I want to share with you my new favorite “picture style” I call it water clouds.

I want to share with you my experience because to make these kind of pictures is very simple you do not need high end equipment or a complicate set up.

You just need a camera, a tripod and a flash. You can use the camera flash or better is to use a flash which you can move independent from your camera. In addition you need a tank filled with water, one or two eye droppers, a white piece of paper and last but not least some different colored ink, or for the beginning you can also use milk.

Locate the water tank in front of the piece of paper and place the camera in front of the tank. Make some test shots to find the optimum location of the flash consider all your knowledge which you have for making pictures of reflecting / glass surfaces or just try and error and you will find the optimum location. Anyhow fix the flash in this location, I used a second tripod but you can use as well some other stuff like books, or tins. Place a pen or something else in the middle of the tank and set the focus of the camera to this point. For the real shots your can set your camera to manual focus.

That’s all.

It is helpful if a second person assists you especially if you work with two colors. This person can make the drops, and you can make the shots. In my case my daughter Isabelle supported me.

Below you can see some samples of these pictures, on the picture with the black background I used a piece of Molton and by the way all pictures are rotated 180 degrees. I think this gives the pictures a special style and it is not obviously what it is.

The possibilities to modify these pictures in Photoshop are multifarious.

Left hand side the original right hand side the modification.

Below my favorite picture Photoshop gives the special color.

If you look for a longer time on these pictures you can identify various shapes and forms  as if you look into a cloudy sky. Below you can see the favorite picture of my daughter she sees a poodle head and a parrot in the middle. Do you have the same fantasy?
